The Anglo-Portuguese Alliance Post Brexit

Guest Speaker: Jorge de Abreu

Our Guest Speaker is Jorge de Abreu, founding partner of the leading Portuguese law firm Abreu & Marques e Associados, one of the first Portuguese law firms to open offices abroad, begining with their London Branch which opened in 1987. Jorge graduated from Lisbon University in 1968, and he also graduated from Strasbourg University in Comparative Law in the 1970s.

The family has a house in Central London where he spends about a third of his time, and he has been an active member of the Carlton Club for many years. Fluent in English, French and Spanish, his practice areas are commercial and companies’ law, mergers and acquisitions, banking law, real estate, energy, intellectual property and arbitration. Jorge will trace the history of the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance, touch upon its unique endurance, and its renewed relevance post Brexit.

A Celebration of Perpetual Friendship:

“There is no friendship in the world so strong and so sure as that which exists in between England and Portugal.”

Long before the first formal written treaty was Sealed in St Paul’s Cathedral on 16 June 1373, there were perennial trading and intermittent political relations, founded upon a common brotherhood in arms, arising from the Crusades. In June 1147, an expedition of 164 ships carrying soldiers of various nationalities, including Englishmen, on the way to Palestine put into the River Douro.

Its leaders were persuaded by the Bishop of Oporto to proceed to the Tagus, to help Alfonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, to conquer Lisbon from the Moors. A red headed British cleric, Gilbert of Hastings, became the first Bishop of the restored See.

Seven hundred and seventy years later, The Portuguese Expeditionary Corps first saw action in Flanders on 16 and 17 June 1917, fought bravely at the Battle of the Lys on 9 April 1918, and was then regrouped and fought with the British Army. By the time the ceasefire was announced on 11 November 1918, the Portuguese had reached the river Escaut and had entered Belgium.

Fr Ulick Loring, Parish Priest, StJames’ Church, Twickenham, has commissioned two War Memorial Windows, one to remember the Portuguese War Dead of the First World War, and the other to acknowledge the personal contribution made by the last King of Portugal, in his support for the war effort, and in the care of the sick and the wounded. These Memorial Windows will be unveiled on 9 April 2018. Funds are being raised to support the Parish Priest in his endeavours, to remember the sacrifice made by Portugal in the First World War. We need to raise the final £9,000 this year.

A Dinner to celebrate our Perpetual Friendship with Portugal, and to raise funds for these Memorial Windows, will be held at 7:30 p.m. for 8 o’clock, on Friday 16 June 2017 at The Cavalry & Guards Club, 127 Piccadilly, London, W1J 7PX.

Please view www.cavgds.co.uk for directions and for further information about the venue.
