The Friar of the Stigmata
Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, affectionately known worldwide as Padre Pio, is one of the most beloved and revered saints of the 20th century. A Capuchin friar, mystic, and miracle-worker, he dedicated his life to prayer, the ministry of the Confessional, and the relief of suffering.
Born Francesco Forgione in 1887, he was famously marked with the Stigmata—the wounds of Christ—which he bore for fifty years. Despite his worldwide fame and the extraordinary spiritual gifts attributed to him, Padre Pio remained a humble servant of God, famously describing himself as “a poor brother who prays.”
